Long-Term Benefits of Direct Instruction with Reification for Learning the Control of Variables Strategy

چکیده
We compare three learning conditions on 57 middle school students’ shortand long-term retention at applying the control of variables strategy. Collapsing over time, direct instruction with reification yielded more robust learning than either direct instruction without reification or discovery learning conditions as measured by skill at constructing unconfounded experiments.

Comparing Pedagogical Approaches for Teaching the Control of Variables Strategy
In this study, an extension of Klahr and Nigam (2004), we tested 177 middle school students’ on their acquisition of the control of variables strategy (CVS) using an interactive virtual ramp environment. We compared the effectiveness of three pedagogical approaches, namely, direct instruction with reification, direct instruction without reification, and discovery learning, all of which were aut...
متن کاملThe Effect of Mnemonic Key Word Method on Vocabulary Learning and Long Term Retention
Most of the studies on the key word method of second/foreign language vocabulary learning have been based on the evidence from laboratory experiments and have primarily involved the use of English key words to learn the vocabularies of other languages. Furthermore, comparatively quite limited number of such studies is done in authentic classroom contexts. The present study inquired into the eff...

In order to confirm the effectiveness of language learning strategies in theIranian context in junior high schools, this study was designed to examine thepatterns of strategy use, the effects of strategy instruction on the students’ strategyuse, and the relationship between the participants’ strategy use and their Englishachievement. To achieve this objective, 57 junior high school participants...
متن کاملDirect Instruction vs. Discovery: The Long View
D. Klahr and M. Nigam (2004) make a case for the superiority of direct instruction over discovery learning in students’ mastery of the control-of-variables strategy central to the scientific method. In the present work, we examine acquisition of this strategy among students of the same age as those studied by Klahr and Nigam, as well as follow central features of their design in directly compar...
متن کاملComparing pedagogical approaches for the acquisition and long-term robustness of the control of variables strategy
This study compared three pedagogical approaches on the acquisition and robust understanding of the control of variables strategy (CVS). In Sao Pedro et al. (2009), we showed that two direct learning conditions (with and without reification) significantly outperformed the discovery learning condition for constructing unconfounded experiments starting from an initially multiply confounded experi...
